
Biography
Lara Biancalana was born in 2003 in Rome into a family of musicians and began playing the cello at the age of six. Her early training took place at the Santa Cecilia Conservatoire in Rome, where she studied under Paolo Andriotti.
In 2018, she was awarded a generous scholarship to attend The Yehudi Menuhin School in the UK, a specialist institution for musically gifted young people. There, she had the privilege of studying with Thomas Carroll, Matthijs Broersma, and Adrian Brendel. Following her time in the UK, she continued her studies with Antonio Meneses as scholarship holder of the Stauffer Center for Strings in Cremona, until his tragic departure. She then completed her Bachelor’s degree with top marks and honorable mention and implemented her studies under the guidance of Alessio Pianelli and Quartetto Prometeo at Avos Project – International Music School in Rome. She subsequently earned her Master’s degree at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen with Andreas Brantelid and is currently enrolled in the Academy's prestigious Soloist Program.
Alongside her studies, she has been active both as a soloist and chamber musician. Lara made her concert debut at the Ravenna Festival in 2016, invited by Giovanni Sollima, and has since performed at major venues and festivals such as Teatro alla Scala, Teatro La Fenice, Sala Verdi, The Menuhin Hall, Trame Sonore, Gstaad Menuhin Festival, Heidelberger Frühling, and Copenhagen Summer Festival. In 2021 she was selected to participate in the Kronberg Academy’s “Mit Musik – Miteinander” project, and in 2022–2023 she was Artist in Residence at the Society of Concerts in Milan.
Since 2021, she has also been a member of the LGT Young Soloists, performing both as a soloist and chamber musician in some of Europe’s most prestigious concert halls, including the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Tonhalle in Zurich, Stadtcasino in Basel and Bern, Liszt Hall in Geneva.
She has received scholarships and awards from institutions such as the Roscini-Padalino Foundation, the Cucinelli Foundation, and Musica con le Ali, who have supported her since 2019 as one of their young artists.
She is also a prize winner of numerous international competitions, including the Audience Prize at the Anna Kull Cello Competition in Graz, the Premio Crescendo in Florence (where she also received the Jury’s Prize), the International Dinu Lipatti Competition, LAMS Matera Award, and the Grand Prize Virtuoso in Salzburg.
In chamber music, she was previously part of Quartetto Klem, with whom she won the Premio Marzani 2024, and is currently a member of Trio Lingo, most recently awarded 3rd prize at the Rued Langgaard Competition with own original arrangements of his music.
Over the years, she has taken part in several masterclasses with leading international cellists including Jakob Koranyi, Mats Lidström, Enrico Dindo, Giovanni Gnocchi, Enrico Bronzi, Colin Carr, Kian Soltani, Thomas Demenga, Frans Helmerson, Sol Gabetta, and Steven Isserlis.
She is currently playing a cello made by Guldbrandt Enger in 1859, kindly loaned to her by the Royal Danish Academy of Music.
